Pitta Bread Recipe 

Mediterranean Pitta Bread Fresh from the Oven

Classic Mediterranean Food

You'll love this Basic Pitta Bread Recipe - Just think of all the good things you can stuff into a Pitta.
It's so easy to make delicious Snacks and tasty pitta pockets. For a healthy, low carb, light meal, why not stuff a Pitta with fresh salad and our own homemade Hummus, see photo. For another vegetarian delight, why not stuff some with crispy iceberg and Baba Ganoush.
Or you can use grilled meats, fish, or even roasted vegetables. It's really versatile bread, and much easier to prepare than a sandwich.


Homemade Hummus and salad in a Fresh Pitta Pocket.

Ingredients for Eight Pittas.

  • 300ml./1-1/2 cups of tepid water.
  • 1tsp. granulated sugar.
  • 1tsp. salt.
  • 2-1/2 cups 400g./12ozs. of strong white bread flour. 
  • N.B. - For Wholemeal Pittas use 200g. Wholemeal flour and 200g. White. 
  • 1tsp. Easy bake yeast - U.S.A. instant yeast.

Method

  1. Place the bread ingredients in the breadmaker in the following order: water olive oil - flour - sugar - salt and yeast. Select BASIC DOUGH and start the cycle.
  2. Or by hand - In a warm bowl, mix all the dry ingredients together.
  3. Add the water and mix. 
  4. Add the olive oil and mix to form a soft dough. 
  5. Knead for about ten minutes on a floured surface. 
  6. Return to the lightly floured mixing bowl and cover with oiled cling film. 
  7. Leave to prove in a warm place for 40 - 60 minutes or until doubled in size. 
  8. Remove the dough when it is ready in the machine or it has doubled in size in the mixing bowl. 
  9. Divide into 8 pieces.
  10. Knock back each piece and roll out into 9"x 5" Ovals on a floured surface.
  11. Place each one, a little apart, on an oiled baking sheet .
  12. Cover with oiled cling film and leave to rise in a warm place for 10-15 minutes.
  13. Remove the film and bake in a pre-heated oven at 400ºf/200ºc for 8 to 10 minutes until puffed up and golden brown. 
  14. Cool and fill.
